That was my experience at the new Privé Salon in Malibu. Tucked on the second floor of the Lumber Yard—the fabulous open-air, eco-conscious complex that's home to James Perse, Maxfield, and Alice + Olivia shops, to name but a few—Privé is completely devoid of the attitude you often find at top salons. Owned and run by Chelby and Simone Dufourg, the charming son and daughter-in-law duo of Privé's founder, Laurent D, the salon oozes California chic and creativity. White walls act as clean backdrops for original artwork, such as a piece by Mr. Brainwash of David Bowie. Another work, banana and bamboo leaves pressed between glass, serves as a privacy screen for clients getting their hair washed. The salon's design concept would make any environmentalist proud. The floors are reclaimed bamboo, and the workstations are made of a sustainable washed oak. Looking from the salon across the Lumber Yard's courtyard, you see views of the rugged Santa Monica Mountains. Even the reading material is green. Instead of stacks and stacks of last month's magazines, you'll find iPads loaded with look books created by the team of the season's coolest cuts.
