Jean Seberg a incarné à ses débuts Jeanne d'Arc dans "Sainte-Jeanne" d'Otto Preminger puis sera l'égérie de la Nouvelle Vague après le film "A bout de souffle" de Jean-Luc Godard. En 1964, elle obtient un second très grand rôle dans "Lilith" de Robert Rossen qui lui vaudra d'être stéréotypée dans des personnages de jeune femme et d'épouse tricheuse, déséquilibrée et sophistiquée. Elle tourne à nouveau en France en 1966 avec Claude Chabrol et en 1968, elle joue sous la direction de l'écrivain Romain Gary qu'elle a épousé cinq ans plus tôt. En 1970, le FBI la persécute pour son soutien à la cause des Black Panthers.
